The Book of Mormon is a sacred text that was published in March 1830 by Joseph Smith, Jr. According to Smith, the book is originally written in an otherwise unknown language called “reformed Egyptian” on golden plates and it should be of similar importance as the Bible. Smith said he has received these plates in 1827 from an angel named Moroni, who identified himself to Smith as a Native American, which wrote a part of the book for over a thousand years ago. According to Smith this ancient Moroni buried the plates in a hill near Smith’s home in Manchester, New York. From the books introduction:

The Book of Mormon – written on golden plates

The book was written by many ancient prophets by the spirit of prophecy and revelation. Their words, written on gold plates, were quoted and abridged by a prophet-historian named Mormon. The record gives an account of two great civilizations. One came from Jerusalem in 600 b.c. and afterward separated into two nations, known as the Nephites and the Lamanites. The other came much earlier when the Lord confounded the tongues at the Tower of Babel. This group is known as the Jaredites. After thousands of years, all were destroyed except the Lamanites, and they are among the ancestors of the American Indians.

  1. The Devil can also pretend to be an angel being a fallen angel himself. He knows all about the World we live in as well as the heavenly life, so imagine how easy it can be to deceive a human mind by merging half truths into full lies to fit the desires of the human mind. He also quoted the scriptures to Jesus when he was trying to deceive him into submission take less of a normal human. This is just my opinion and I employ you believers of this faith to check facts, think away from your emotions and desires and don’t allow yourself to be deceived by half truths.

    • No half truths whatsoever.

      This is a spectacular gift and only those who have not prayed in a spirit of humility to learn the truthfulness I’ll be those who cannot accept it. It’s their choice just like it’s my choice to accept it. It really is that simple.

      Ask God it it’s real.

It will save Everyone who is seeking to Love God and to keep the comandments, to live with Him for ever in the life after to come. And I know this book teaches how to save yourself and family too. This I know with all my soul I testify to you, I know to be the truth, in the Holy name of our Savior Jesus Christ, amen.

        I know that Book Of Mormon is a gift for heaven who teach me the truth of Gospel. Indeed it is another testament of Jesus Christ and together with the holy bible it testify about the atonement of Jesus Christ, His ministry, the plan of Salvation and also shows me who I am, where I am coming from, why I am here on earth and where I will go after this mortal life. It is comforting me within my daily afflictions and shows me through the Holy Ghost what to do and follow in order to have joy in this life and for eternity according with the God’s will. I invite you to read its words that are God’s words through His disciples, then ponder in your heart&mind its messages, and I promise you that you will be guided by God to receive joy and His blessings even in your affliction time. This is my testimony which I bear to you in the name of Jesus Christ, the Reedemer and the Saviour of the children of God. Amen.

It teaches about Christ. You can find all kinds of bad rumors about the church or about Joseph smith. There are always critics. But Joseph Smith and many others gave up their lives for something they knew to be true. When I read the Book of Mormon, I can understand truth, and I feel closer to Christ. I’m thankful for those who came before me and sacrificed so much so that I can be where I am today, and have the gospel truths I do have.

      Also the Mormon God the Father and Jesus are not the Ones in the Holy Bible. God the Father according to Mormons is a man who was exalted and Jesus is the offspring of this man and Mary.

I wanted to see for myself. So far, I’ve been led to believe that aliens are the ones who led that guy to the golden tablets. Aliens? Come on! So far, I’m leaning on my Bible for support. I asked God to tell me if the Book of Mormon was legit and the next thing I knew, as the HOly Spirit came down on me pretty hard…I had nightmares after nightmares, ghostly dreams, and scarry thoughts. Nuff said. I’m sticking with the Holy Bible. That’s why it’s called the Holy Bible. It is HOLY, whereas, the Book of Mormon is just a book written by a guy that was maybe a little touched.

    • Not aliens. Let the scripture speak for itself: 2 Corinthians 11:13 KJV For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. 14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

      you pray for forgiveness while you have grudges against others, and now you come online and bear false witness, I guess you’ve read the wrong book, go and look again, you are to read and study with a book with your heart because you are not reading it to just understand it, but you are reading it to find answers.

  4. This book of Mormons would only be true if there’s any historical/archaeological evidence to give it firm authenticity. Otherwise, it’s a good book to read, its formative but not authoritative so i need further clarification on how it was arranged till it reached that level of becoming Scripture with valid evidence in the side of authors. Were they inspired to write or just an attempt to create impression of acceptance from people? if inspired which inspiration?

      According to Anatoly T. Fomenko in his book History Fiction or Science the entire timeline of history is false. The Bible was written during the 1400 to 1500s and that no achaeological evidence has ever proved or supported the idea that the events spoken of in the Bible took place in the city now called Jerusalem or the land now called Israel. I have read 300 pages of the book and it is very convincing.
      But I do not base the worth of the Bible or the Book of Mormon on whether the events related took place at a particular location nor in a particular year in the past.
      The reality is many cultures who do not have the Bible has oral traditions telling of a creation, a fall, a flood etc. The truth in an sacred book can only be weighed upon the value the truth stated has to a human’s spiritual comprehension and growth. No prophet or Holy man knew all the truth. They wrote according to their knowledge and belief. If a thing is part of Truth its source is irrelevant. To say a thing is not true based upon it’s source is to say authority is the source of truth. That my friend is absolutely false.

      • Hi Okureje

        I found your comment while googling about “The Book of Mormon.” I find it fascinating/incredulous that here in South Africa, where racism was law during the apartheid era, that there are still so many so-called Black people who follow this faith and are members of The Church of Latter Day Saints, which has a history of racism and racists bias. I am busy reading a book called “The History of Christianity – Struik.” Based on what I’ve read in this book, I disagree with you that there is no historical evidence to back up some of the events recorded in the Bible. There are documented artifacts/archaeological findings proving that some portions of the Bible were written way before the 1400’s and 1500’s, and records of historical events recorded in the Bible. You should extend your reading to get a better insight regarding recorded facts. No disrespect or insult, nor offence intended. Happy reading.

      Thank you for your great comment. I am a convert to The church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. My advice to you is that you should read it and ask Heavenly Father if it is true. While there is archaeological evidence of the origins of The Book of Mormon as well as the testimony of three and eight witnesses, the real value are between the pages. The question really should be focused on whether it contains the truth. I hope this might help somewhat. Be belssed. :)

  5. Hi, I have a couple of questions for Mormons here that I would love answered. If you don’t have an answer I would love for you to research these and get back to me with an honest answer because I am struggling here. If you think what I am writing is wrong, I would also love an explanation:

    Large parts of the Book of Mormon were found to be the same as parts of the 1769 version of the King James Version of the Bible. We know it was the 1769 version because even translation errors UNIQUE to that bible were copied into the original 1830 Book of Mormon. This is not denied even by LDS scholars, but my question is, if this is the case, how does this fit into Joseph Smith’s translating process?

    If you think I am making this up, then you will find many LDS scholars agree on this point, but I really want to understand how this can be compatible with the BoM being 100% the true word of God.

    • I am a practicing member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and a believer in the divine origin of the Book of Mormon. I am new to this site and this is an old comment and probably no longer of interest. But, scrolling down I did not see any interesting comments. In regard to your question, I assume that you are specifically talking about the long quotations of Isaiah. I have put the two side by side in a Word document and noted all of the differences in the Isaiah text and the text as quoted in the Book of Mormon. First, they are not identical. While the texts are very close, there were more differences than I thought. The majority of which being in the italicized portions of the King James with some modernizations of the language. I found the narrative of an exact plagiarism somewhat exaggerated in terms of my own study, not relying on the words of scholars or skeptics. Second, if one assumes that the biblical text is reliable or has been well preserved we would expect the texts to be very close and in fact the closeness of the texts should testify of the reliability of the King James text, if the Bible is “the word of God” in the sense that you say. In regard to translation “errors” I am not a translator and don’t have access to the most current texts. I have heard some say that the texts of Isaiah found in the Dead Sea Scrolls, which are now the oldest known copies of Isaiah and even incorporated in some versions of the Bible vindicate the quoted text in the Book of Mormon. I have not been able to read the texts in their ancient languages and could not speak to “errors”. However, some scholars in the faith have felt that during the translation of the text when Book of Mormon prophets quoted and commented on Isaiah, when quotations began, Joseph Smith went on autopilot and was influenced by the reading of the text he grew up with in the translation process. I don’t have a problem with that point of view, but I am not certain it is right. Lastly, even if you have difficulty with the origin story of the Book of Mormon or doubts that you can suspend doubt long enough to find value in its merits. Almost no one today believes in ancient Greek myths and the writings of Shakespeare as the word of God, but many have written tomes regarding their value and the truths they contain. This site is a testament to this type of analysis. I have serious doubts about texts that lay outside of my tradition, but I recognize the philosophical value and commonality among them. I don’t believe they are worthless. As a fellow searcher I wish you the best in your search of the truth and hope you are finding your own satisfaction with the truths you encounter.

    • There are numerous anachronisms, very glaring gaps in the evidence, and numerous errors in the Book of Mormon. The confirmations are more coincidences than anything else as they’re very vague. For instance, the mound builders were known at the time of Joseph Smith yet the LDS culture calls it a confirmation that the Book of Mormon is true because they claim Joseph couldn’t have known that. Well, it was well-known and much discussed in his time. On top of that, including that in the book only confounds the geographical references.

      The greatest preponderance of evidence will pretty much pull a thinking person to the side of disbelief. If someone were to come forth with such a story now, it would be scoffed at by all but the most gullible. But don’t take my word for it. Dig deep into the Book of Mormon. Read it cover to cover. Investigate it and think about it logically.

      I was a devout Mormon for many decades. While I hold nothing against the people, it very much bothers me that the church persists in promulgating this and a very strict control of its members. It is a large deception with much PR work going on behind the scenes. The story changes and evolves to accommodate the popular opinions of the times and to cover voids in doctrine and logic.

      On the other hand, if something brings you peace and happiness, I’m not going to contend with it. I WILL contend with the undue influence the church exercises with its vast wealth and political power.

    • I faced this same question 46 years ago before I joined the LDS church. I believe the Bible to be the Word of God, at all times including 1769. My conclusion was that prehaps the “Errors in translation” were the correction by inspiration of God for the early translators of the Bible ultimately required His inspiration as did the original authors.

    • Dear Joseph, to get a wise answer I invite you to follow what Joseph Smith did to find his answer from God directly. I know God is our Father from Heaven and He will guide you as Joseph Smith has been guided. Heavenly Father knows everything, He is the Creator, He allowed the history of the world to be wrote and said by His prophets who lived in bible time and in BOM time. As Lehi, who is a descendant of Abraham and Jacob, testified to his sons:
      “And if ye shall say there is no law, ye shall also say there is no sin. If ye shall say there is no sin, ye shall also say there is no righteousness. And if there be no righteousness there be no happiness. And if there be no righteousness nor happiness there be no punishment nor misery. And if these things are not there is no God. And if there is no God we are not, neither the earth; for there could have been no creation of things, neither to act nor to be acted upon; wherefore, all things must have vanished away” (2 Nephi 2:13). So, wear the armour of God with your own faith and if you shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, He [God] will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost. (Moroni 10_4-5).

    • That does seem to be the problem here. The problem with the bible is that for so many years, priests had to hand-write their bibles, and information was bound to be lost in the translation and subjected to human error. All we can do with the bible is take it for face value and the Book of Mormon does have events that have also been cited in the Mayan culture and other aboriginal cultures in the Americas. I take The Book of Mormon as a history of the peoples here in America and do appreciate the historical context that it does give, just as I do for ALL of the holy texts on this site. Just because there is a holy text you do not agree with, maybe it is time that you take a step back until you can look at it without a jaundiced eye. There is so much to learn here and I believe that all of these holy texts do have value. As an amateur archaeologist, the Book of Mormon DOES have enough information that does point to its validity of it.

  7. To all who are sceptical the solution here is simple and that is what the Book of Mormon says in Moroni.. Pray about it and ask God if its not true and no one can speak better and clearly to you than the God you know to exist. Mormons do not try to convince people they teach them to find out for themselves. Can we as humans start to do that for ourselves in all things

  8. People are always under the MISCONCEPTION that the LDS Church does not follow the BIBLE. The BIBLE is its’core belief with the other documents being supplemental to it. The LDS members are the kindest, finest people I have ever met. They strive harder than any other people I have met to be “Christ-like”. As a independent Christian I have found most judgmental “Christians” to be fake and a poor representative of the teachings of Christ.

  9. The Mormon claim of using Eze 37:15-19 to authenticate this book is absurd. People are blind and believe anything. Read II Cor 4:3-5. The Bible says that a time will come when men will not endure sound doctrine but instead give heed to doctrines of demons. Please my advice is that you hold firmly to the BIBLE. Have you researched about the writer Joe? Please do and you will be shocked. The book is soo false and leading many astray. Better repent and accept the true gospel of the living Jesus Christ. Because it fulfills an apparent need amongst those people’s for a religion that isn’t controlled by by foreigners, ie Arabs, Europeans. Jews, Asiatics etc. America needed it’s own Religion, as American as apple pie. I was not at all surprised at Joe Smiths visions, but by Americans willingness to believe them, until I put them into the context of America’s need to control everything.

    Before you can ascertain a book to be trustworthy, it must be proofed beyond reasonable doubt. Can any one come out with the historical, archaeological and scientific proof of the book of mormon?
    Search for yourself and you will discover and be daze of its deception!
    Being a follower of Christ is not about belonging to a sect, denomination or church. It’s simply accepting Him as you personal Lord and savior and allowing Him to take over your life.
    My prayer for you dear brothers and sisters in Mormonism:
    You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.

    • It’s not about that type of “proof”. It’s much more subjective to the point that once you’ve seen the truth and asked God without relying on a lower standard you’ll feel the truth.

      There can be no firmer foundation than just knowing something inside of you.

      Spent a life time dealing with a certain standard of proof but if you do as the narrative suggests that understanding will come.

      Works for me. Proved it for me.

  15. The book of Mormon is true. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is also true. Many people do not understand that the word “Saint” does not mean Demi-God, as the Catholic church uses it, LDS folks use the word Saint as a follower of Christ, or disciple. This is a misconception by many who think that mormon’s pray to Joseph Smith, thinking (in a catholic way) that he must be the “Saint” that mormons pray to. In actuality, this is just 2 different groups using the same word in different ways. Mormon’s have many different terms that have evolved over the last centuries. examples:
    parish=ward=congregation
    communion = sacrement
    worship service = sacrament meeting
    Priest = Bishop(presides over a congregation)
    Scriptures = Bible, Book of Mormon, Doctrine & Covenants, Pearl of Great Price, +More Modern Revelations.

    Part of why I beleive the book of Mormon, and everything else in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is how it tells of how I lived before I was born. Not reincarnation. But how God created my spirit before I was born, how in order for me to progress beyond where I was at, I needed to be born and experience mortal/temporal life. This resonates with me because I see wisdom in it, where other churches say that without baptism or membership in that church you will be damned to hell, the mormon church shows that God does not work that way, all will be redeemed (with few exceptions) and just by being born we have made progress that God deemed worthy for us to endure all the hardships and trials of life.
